The Therapy Exeperience
Maybe You Should Talk To Someone by Lori Gotlieb
This one was a hit at book club! Quite the tear jerker.
The Gift of Therapy by Irvin Yalom
Tender and insightful. I read this one many moons ago when I was freshly interning and it deepened my appreciation of therapy and the therapeutic relationship.
Past Tense by Sacha Mardou
I love a graphic memoir! This one is a fast read and provides a unique look at Sacha's experience as a client navigating anxiety, trauma, and family dynamic issues. She beautifully illustrates emotions and provides an intriguing glimpse of the therapy process, including her experiences working with IFS.
Internal Family Systems
No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz, PhD
This is a very readable overview of IFS with exercises woven throughout to help you grow acquainted with your parts.
Personality Disorders &
Complicated Relationship Dynamics
Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD
If your parent(s) have been self-absorbed or emotionally unavailable, this book may be for you.
Stop Walking on Eggshells by Paul T. Mason, MS & Randi Kroger
Very useful for those who are struggling to navigate emotions and boundaries with a high conflict person.
Stop Walking on Eggshells for Partners by Randi Kroger, LCSW, JD
This has a lot of the same great content from Stop Walking on Eggshells but with a special emphasis on marriage and committed relationships.
Trauma
Complex PTSD: from Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker
Very informative about the "4-F" trauma responses: fight, flight, fawn, and freeze.
Relationships & Dating
Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller
This book explores how attachment styles influence the quality of our relationships in adulthood. It provides practical information around how to move toward greater attachment security and an increased sense of safety within relationships. I highly recommend for those who are currently dating.
